Slot Review

By Michael C. Goldberg
Rise of Merlin online slot

There are no fancy boosters and unique bonus games, no bonus buys or Ante bets. If you want free spins, you’ll have to earn them the old way. But with just a bare minimum this online slot managed to stay within the Top 40 Most Played Slots for four years straight from 2020 to 2023. In 2021, it landed 13th, ahead of some of the most iconic titles.

Considering that this game is an almost exact copy of Play’n GO’s biggest hit, Book of Dead, this type of performance is kind of expected.

Features

Now that you know that the studio took inspiration from another hit, you probably know what to expect in terms of features. Because this game isn’t much different from its more popular predecessor. There are simply some changes to how free spins work and that’s basically it.

Rise of Merlin base game

Rise of Merlin is a 5×3 slot with up to 10 lines, and it’s one of rare cases when players have control over how many lines they want to activate. You can literally have any number of lines between 1 and 10. Selecting fewer lines would save you money but will definitely affect the hit frequency.

Risk Game

Any win can be gambled to double or quadruple the amount won. That’s a classic type of risk game where you either guess the color of a card or its suit. In the main game, the gamble option would appear after every win, and for free spins there will be an opportunity to gamble the entire bonus win at the end of the feature.

Free Spins

In base mode, there isn’t much going on. You’ll push the Spin button and decide whether to gamble your winnings or not. Wilds are scatters at the same time. There are no multipliers or any other special symbols or modifiers. And by keeping everything so simple, the studio was able to boost the bonus game hit frequency, which is incredibly useful considering you can’t pay for free spins or for extra scatters on the reels.

Rise of Merlin free spins

The bonus round is where Rise of Merlin is different from Book of Dead. Because it awards not 10 but 8 free spins per bonus activation and retrigger. But to make up for the smaller pack of FS, the studio introduced the opportunity to have multiple expanding symbols. With every retrigger you’ll have one more expanding symbol randomly selected so that eventually you can have all regular symbols as expanding, which is incredibly exciting.

Rise of Merlin expanding symbols

Expanding symbols are the key to landing bigger wins, and when you have a few of them at the same time, it means plenty of payouts. It would be nice if players could select the expanding symbols because that would allow them to adjust the risk level to their gaming style. But apparently, it’s not that big of a deal as many gamblers love Rise of Merlin the way it is.

Conclusion

Rise of Merlin takes all the things that players love and offers a special twist that makes it more appealing for some players. It’s pretty uncomplicated with just a bonus game with expanding symbols as special features, but gamblers love it, and the slot shows consistently high performance throughout the years.
